Cape Mudge We Wai Kai Nation
Cape Mudge was named by Captain George Vancouver in 1792 after Zachary Mudge, who had served on HMS Discovery, and in 1796 on HMS Providence in this area. Built in 1898, the original lighthouse was a wooden, two-storey building topped with a lantern on the roof. The lighthouse has since been restored and still stands as a beacon on the south end of Quadra for late night water travellers.
The We Wai Kai Nation, also known as the Wewaikai First Nation, the Cape Mudge First Nation and the Cape Mudge Indian Band, is the band government of the We Wai Kai subgroup of the Laich-kwil-tach (also Legwildok or Euclataws or Yucultas or "Southern Kwakiutl") group of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples, based on Quadra Island offshore from Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada.

Discovery Passage
The strait was named by Captain Vancouver in 1792 after his ship, HMS Discovery. Other sources say that the passage was named by Captain Kellett because Vancouver's Discovery had sailed through the passage earlier.
